Feel Good, Do Good

We miss racing just as much as you, so we're bringing you Dirt, Sweat & Beers, a run and cleanup series featuring eight events from June through November. From the Bay Area to the Sierra, each event features a 5K/10K open course and a DIY cleanup. Why? Because we want to feel good and do good!

While we're at it, REI, Sierra Nevada and Salomon want to bring some fun to the event, so you can bet there will be some surprises and prizes along the way. Top time finishers with verified times of each course in three categories: Woman, Man and Open  Gender will receive a pair of Salomon shoes, REI Co-op hip pack and some Sierra Nevada swag. At the end of the series, one overall winner for each category, who completed the most, verified courses (running the same course multiple times doesn't count for this one!) will receive a Dirt, Sweat & Beers package featuring a Salomon hydration vest, a pair of Salomon shoes, a paid REI Co-op run outfitting appointment to complete your head to toe look, a Sierra Nevada giftcard and more!

Kick off the series with us at our first event, open from June through July, at Sanborn County Park. Register for the 5K or 10K course, select your race kit and collect your DIY cleanup kit. Cheers and we'll see you out on the trails! Participants must be 21+ to participate in Dirt, Sweat & Beers.

How it works

For each event, REI is partnering with

Opening Date

Closing Date

Starts on June 1

Key takeaways:

How it Works

Run and clean up all trails or a select few, the best part is, it's up to you! How? Introducing the "open course" format, a GPS course designed by The Trail Portal that allows you to compete against others at your own time and own pace, during an event time period in compliance with the local park rules. Just like a chip in a race bib, your time can be validated and your name populated onto the leaderboard.

Make the Commitment

Register for each Dirt, Sweat & Beers event to gain access to the event course and make a pledge to complete your DIY cleanup. Each 5K and 10K course requires separate registration. Participants must be 21+ to participate in Dirt, Sweat & Beers.

Plan your Outing

Run, walk, hike or plog the course on your own schedule within the 60-day event period. You can run the course as many times as you'd like in the 60-day event period to get your best time. Track your results on the RunGo App leaderboard. Your best time will be recorded on the leaderboard. Before, during or after your run, pick up trash along the trail or surrounding area to care for the lands that let us run free.

Download the RunGo App
All Dirt, Sweat & Beers courses are powered through the RunGo App and an access link will be sent directly to the email you registered with to receive the course. Collect Run and Cleanup badges on the RunGo App to let us know all the good work you're doing.

#RecreateResponsibily

1. Know before you go & stay safe –Research local guidelines and follow social-distance protocols

· Always wear cleanup gloves with the nitrile (plastic) side on your palm.

· Look before you grab trash—pay attention to any sharp or unknown objects.

· Place sharp objects like glass shards in a solid container, like a glass jar, and   dispose of them safely.

· If you come across hazardous materials like needles, check with your local hospital, municipality or county to find the best way to properly dispose of them.

· It’s never a bad idea to have a small first-aid kit on hand.

2. Grab your DIY Cleanup Kit & get outside

· Your kit will have all the basics you need! Gloves, trash bags, a face covering and a few extra bonus items.

· Don’t forget a reusable water bottle and snacks so you can stay hydrated and properly fueled.

3. Pick up trash & dispose of it properly

· If you’re in a public park or trail network, this can be as easy as figuring out where the nearby public trash and recycling receptacles are located.

· If you’re cleaning an area without public trash receptacles, contact your local disposal company to find drop-off points in your area.

· Review your local recycling guidelines –Earth911 provides a location-based recycling search tool and the EPA has a guide for how to recycle common items.

4. Share your impact on social media

· Post your photos, tag @REI, @SierraNevada and @Salomon, and hashtag #REIDirtSweatandBeers and #OptOutside

RunGo App and Race Technology FAQ

Do I need to use RunGo to participate in Dirt, Sweat & Beers?

Yes, you will need to use RunGo to participate in Dirt, Sweat & Beers, since that is where the courses are hosted and that is where results will be uploaded. The RunGo app can be downloaded to all smartphones, and you can also access everything you need in a browser. We recommend the app.

How do I use the RunGo app?

You can find RunGo’s step-by-step guide of How to Run an Open Course race, including instructions on how to use the app, here.

How/where do I get the RunGo app?

Click the following links to download the RunGo app for iPhone, Android, or Apple Watch. The RunGo app is free. Tip: For the best mobile experience with the RunGo app, make sure that your smartphone’s operating system is up to date and that you are using the most up-to-date version of the RunGo app. We also recommend running with your iPhone, and not just your Apple Watch, so you can get the full audio experience from Dirt, Sweat & Beers.

Do I need to pay for the RunGo app?

It's free! Your race has partnered with RunGo to make this verified and carefully crafted route free. There are some power-user features for a paid upgrade, but that doesn't change this Open Course race experience. In fact, you don’t even need to create a RunGo account to do your race. Just select the route, and run.

How do I receive the RunGo courses?

When you register for Dirt, Sweat, & Beers, you’ll receive an email confirmation with the course link. The email will go to the email you registered with. If you didn’t receive the email in your inbox, please check your junk and spam folders, or the promotions tab if you use a Gmail account. If that doesn’t work, please email dsb@rei.com.

Do I need to use a GPS watch to be added to the official leaderboard, or is it enough to have a smartphone?

It is enough to use a smartphone. You do not need a GPS watch at all - you just need a smartphone with the RunGo app.

Do I need to have GPS capabilities to participate?

You technically do not need GPS capabilities to participate in the race, but we highly recommend you use the RunGo app and its built-in GPS functionality to get the full race experience! If you choose to complete the course without utilizing the RunGo app, you will need to print the course map and will need to record your own time. You can then enter your results manually. Again, we recommend that you let the RunGo app do all of this for you! Please note that manual entries will not be eligible for prizes since they cannot be verified. If you want to be eligible for prizes, including “5K/10K Top Finisher” and “Overall 5K/10K Series Champion”, then you must complete your course with the RunGo app. Thank you for understanding.

Do I need the app to follow the route?

It's certainly recommended -- it's much easier. But you may also view the route on the web on your phone. If you grant access for location to your browser, you can see your location as the familiar blue dot, and you can trace the route that way too.

What happens if I go off course by mistake?

The RunGo app will remind you that you're off course. It will only remind you a second time if you're still off course before assuming you're doing that deliberately. You can open the map in the app to figure out where to go, if you need.

Can I listen to music while using the RunGo app?

Yes. RunGo will lower the music volume for a moment while telling you where to go, then the music will come back.

I ran the course last week. Can I register today and have those results counted on the leaderboard?

No. You must register for the course prior to running the course.

I want to complete the 5K and the 10K. Do I need to register separately for both and pay the registration fee for both?

Yes. Each course requires its own race entry and registration fee. We recommend you register for the Feel Good + Do Good + Look Good kit for one course, and then choose the Feel Good (Course Only) option for the other course.

Once I’ve registered, how many times can I run the same course?

Once you’ve registered for a course, you can run it as many times as you would like within the 60 day period that the course is active. All attempts will be added to the leaderboard, but only your fastest time will count.

Can I run the 5K course under my 10K registration? Can I run the 10K course with my 5K registration?

No! Running the incorrect course under the incorrect registration will not sync correctly with the RunGo app. So make sure to stick to the course you registered for.

What if I don’t have cell service on the trail? Will my results still be recorded?

Yes! Read the pre-race instructions, download the RunGo app, and set the correct DSB route as a favorite before you arrive at the start of your run. The RunGo app still uses GPS to record the run and you will have a chance to upload your results to the leaderboard when you have cell service again. To be safe, we recommend downloading the app and “favoriting” the route before leaving home every time.

Why can’t I use Strava?

Strava is not connected to the Dirt, Sweat & Beers leaderboard - RunGo is. There are hundreds of apps like Strava which can time your effort. For this race series, the RunGo app takes care of ALL of that for you. Should you choose to use another timing app, you can manually upload your time to RunGo. But please be advised that any results gathered outside of RunGo cannot be officially verified and will not be eligible to win any prizes.

How do I enter my results manually?

You can enter results manually via the “manual submission form,” which you can find on the 5K or 10K registration page. But remember, manual submissions cannot be officially verified and will not be eligible to win any prizes.

How do automatic/verified activity results get generated and sent to the leaderboard?

Once you stop your run, the app will ask you to upload to the leaderboard. If you forget or don't have cell service you can upload when you do get service. Once you upload to the leaderboard your results appear in the leaderboard right away.

Where does my data go?

Your data stays in the RunGo private leaderboard. Any data you share with RunGo is stored with secure providers in the cloud. All data is encrypted. When you submit your run to the leaderboard, that run data may be shared with the race director and its specific event partners. There are no ads in RunGo nor any 3rd-party tracking services that have any access to your data.

I just read the info on how to use RunGo, and I saw that the last step asks me to upload a Share Image. What’s a Share Image? Do I need to upload one for my results to be counted?

You can share any image or picture you took on your run or in your phone library on your smartphone. It's just an extra way to show friends and family that you completed the Dirt, Sweat & Beers course. You do not need to share an image if you don't want to or if you don't use social media. Your results will still be counted. Oh, and if you do share, please don’t forget to tag @REI, @Salomon, @SierraNevada and use the hashtags #DirtSweatAndBeers and #OptOutside!

What happens if something’s wrong with my phone or app?

We don’t expect this to happen, but we recommend you bring a printed map with the turn-by-turn directions.

4 PM - 10 PM  Check in

Does the app use cellular data?

As soon as you start the route, no data is used by the app. The route is saved to your phone, so the app works offline.

How will my race time compare to someone who stopped their run 10 feet before I did? Or 10 feet after?

Run tracking apps won't always capture the exact same distance for runners doing the same route. That's why we provide a race "Time" as well as an "Adjusted Time." The latter aims to make everyone's run comparable.

What information should I use when submitting race results to the RunGo Dirt, Sweat & Beers leaderboard?

You need to use the same email address, first name and last name that you used to register for the event.

Can I run with my Apple Watch and without my iPhone?

--Yes. Make sure you have the route loaded on your RunGo Apple Watch app before starting. How? You can find the route in the iPhone app and tap the Apple Watch icon on the route view to send to your watch. Or, you can search for the route directly in the Apple Watch app.
--Be sure to start the route in the correct mode: Normal.
--At the end of the run, stop your run, tap done, and export to send back to your iPhone and online RunGo logbook.

--Please know you will still receive the audio navigation messages when you use your Apple watch, however you will not hear the custom, Dirt, Sweat & Beers audio messages from REI, the race director and our sponsors
--Apple Watch tip: swipe side to side to view different screens, like run stats, map and elevation guide, directions, and pause/stop/lock screen. You may swipe up on the Digital Crown to pause and resume your run!

My results on the leaderboard have blue boxes with check marks next to them. What does that mean?

It means that your results are officially verified. You will know that you have successfully ran the course using the RunGo App when the “verified” and "race route" columns are checked on the leaderboard.

My results on the leaderboard do NOT have blue box check marks next to them. Why not?

If you do not see two blue boxes with check marks next to your name, this means that your results are not officially verifiable. Results that are verified mean they properly used the RunGo app to complete their course. If you uploaded your results manually, you will not have two blue boxes checked, as manual uploads are not able to be officially verified.

FAQ

How much does it cost to participate

Not a penny. Just put on your shoes, put on a headlamp and get out there!

Where do I run

Anywhere! It's all up to you, but we suggest something new - new route, new location, new terrain.

Do I have to run

Mileage and speed don’t matter here—it’s all about getting outside and challenging yourself at night. And if you prefer to walk, skip, or roll, that’s good too.

Do I have to complete it on Feb. 28

We’re encouraging everyone to rally together that evening. But if you can’t make that work, we’d still love to see you get out for a night run when you can.

How do I participate

Register above (it’s free), then go for a night run on Feb. 28. That’s literally it. Whether you run for 10 minutes or 10 miles, we’ll donate $1 per registered runner to The Trust for Public Land (up to $10,000). As for who you run with, that’s entirely up to you. You can join a local meet-up, start your own meet-up, head out with a friend or pet, or enjoy the solitude of running by yourself. However you decide to partake, hashtag your night-run pics on Facebook and Instagram with #OptOutside.

Do I have to run with someone else

Nope. You can join a local meet-up, start your own meet-up, head out with a friend or pet, or enjoy the solitude of running by yourself. It’s up to you.

Do I need to submit my time or distance

Nope, but you can share with us by hashtagging #OptOutside in your social post if you want to.

How does the donations portion work

For every person who pledges to run, REI will donate $1 to The Trust for Public Land (up to $10,000). That’s it. It’s a simple, fun way to help support a great cause (and get yourself outside).

Do I have to buy an REI Night Run Cap when I register

Of course not, this is a free event. But if you want to show the world your co-op spirit and/or you need a cool new running hat, grab one of these limited-edition caps before March 5, while supplies last. All sales are final and shipping is limited to valid street addresses in the United States.

When will I receive my hat

Hats will ship after March 5. We'll work to get them to you quickly but unforeseen shipping issues can arise.

Do I need to be an REI Co-op member to participate

No. But if you’re not a member already, we’d love to have you join us. For a one-time $20 fee, you’ll join a welcoming community and get access to great member perks.

Can I use an REI gift card or REI Co-op Mastercard® to purchase my hat

You can use your REI Co-op Mastercard, but in light of the unique format of this event, the hat is not considered an REI purchase and we cannot accept REI gift cards.

What do I do if I didn’t get the confirmation email

First check your junk and spam folders, or the promotions tab if you use a Gmail account. If that doesn’t work, please email outdoorevents@rei.com

Grab your favorite snack and tune in.

OUR PARTNERS

Salomon has been playing in the French alps since 1947.
Our passion for outdoor sports, new technologies and craftsmanship has driven us - and still does - to create progressive gear to enable you to freely enjoy and challenge yourself in the great outdoors. Don’t wait any longer. Now, it’s time to play.

Wishes you a wonderful day

Turns out, good beer can do a lot of good.
We shook things up in the ’80s, and it helped launch a beer revolution that’s in full force today. We keep pushing boundaries, whether that’s in the brewhouse, with sustainability, or in the great outdoors.
